This is a piece that we looked at briefly in class. It is called Madonna of the Roses and was painted by Martin Schongauer in approximately 1472. What can you find out about this piece and what is your response to it?
This piece is both secular and Christian. The secular side shows a perfect woman, all-powerful, luminous, and virtuous object of male love. The beloved. In christian literature and art, she was the Madonna, either the loving mother or the queen of Heaven. Mary as the Madonna of Humility and the Queen of Heaven.
When I look at this piece it has such a powerful feel to it. The bold colors that Mary is wear demands the attention to be focused on her and then slowly moving around at the rest. I really like this piece because it looks like she is thinking about something.
Martin Schongauer was a painter and also did engravings. Martin did several pieces of artwork, only a few of his paintings survive, the most notable of them being the Madonna in the Rose Garden, painted for the church of Saint Martin at Colmar.
I found it very interesting that in most paintings we see Mary has blue clothing on but this one does not.what i like about this pieces is that mary and the child are more colorful than most of the painting
I like the fact that the border around the piece is almost mirrored to each other so it brings the focus to the actual piece. I also like how the angles gowns separate above Mary's head to bring more attention to her head and not have it blend in with anything.
This is the same artist that did the Tormented by Demons piece and it is very interesting to see two entirely different subject matters being done so effectively.
This wonderful piece of art wasn't the only thing to happen in 1472. On December 31st in Amsterdam snow ball fights were prohibited with the words "no one shall throw with snowballs, neither men nor women." Also in 1472 the first astronomical book was published.
What I enjoy about the piece is the two angels up above. I love the shading in them, for at first glance i believed them to be demons. However on further inspection I found them to be pleasing angels.
While most of Schongauer’s paintings were religious he also created comic scenes depicting ordinary life including Peasant Family going to the Market and Two Apprentices fighting. As Aimee said, it is both secular and Christian.
The first thing I noticed about the piece was the red coloring of Mary’s robes, which is very unusual for a Madonna painting. Also unlike other Madonna and Childs, were Mary is usually looking loving at her child, both Mary and Jesus are looking away from each other. I like the fact that Mary and Jesus are not looking at each other yet they still have a loving expression as if they were.
This piece is considered one of Martin Schongauer's most imporant work. It is very interesting that Schongauer decided to make Mary's gown red instead of the traditional blue like many of other artists during that time period. It definitely makes him stand out as an artist. Another important aspect that I noticed about this piece is her natural pose holding her son, it seems very nurturing. I think that by not having them face each other it makes the piece more interesting and gives the audience a different perspective about Mary.
This garden of roses is actually a reference to several poetic lines of the Song of Songs from the Bible, some of which being:
"I am the Rose of Sharon, The lily of the valleys. As a lily among the thistles, So is my beloved among girls"
Personally I feel like the color choices of this painting are really interesting and unexpected. Particularly the vibrant red dress, and the angels black dress & wings.
This piece was originally composed circa 1472, but the intricately detailed neo-gothic frame was a much more recent addition dating to circa 1900. It was composed via tempera, a technique widely used by the guilds of this era. Schongauer was born of a goldsmith who taught him the art of engraving from a very young age. Overall this piece is beautifully structured with symmetric beauty and vibrant jewel-like colors. What most captivated my attention was the very finely detailed crown being held by the angels above her head, as well as the awe-striking realism of the small birds located adjacent to Mary's right shoulder. The floral designs and naturalism that this piece evokes is breath taking.
This is one of Martin Schongauers important work. This painting is definitely about Mary and Jesus. What stands out to me is the crown that the Angels are about to put on her head. It makes me think of Jesus Christ is King and is here to save us from our sins. The painting looks three dimensional. There's a lot of other characters around the painting besides the Angels, Mary, and Jesus. It's definitely a very nice piece.
This painting I found riveting, it was filled with life. Also the red tones in painting fits simultaneously and give the picture a very warm hue against the green in the background. I was lost at the borders of painting, it seem like musicians, angels and angels were telling story about her. When I did my research on the painting.Martin Schongauer was born in 1435, in the same year as took place the Conference of Arras. He was born in Augsburg, the imperial city where many Diets were held of the German Emperors, a city not far from Munich.
Martin Schongauer was a great artist, not only that he was skilled in printmaking, engraving, but he had created amazing paintings. According to his biography, Martin Schongauer was a son of the goldsmith, as he acquired and learned the art skills at his father's workshop. Martin Schnogauer's work stood out from other artists. As many other artists, Schnogauer had his own unique style. His engraved works, had too many details - with too much images put all at once, very close in distance.
Unlike his Engraved work, one of his famous Paintings, "Madonna of the Rose Bower", stood out, not only because I’ts a painting, but this piece of art work also stood out because it has lesser details. While the "Madonna of the Rose Bower", has fewer details, compare to Shongauer’s engraving works, yet this painting stands out in many unique ways. Its' original, unique theme, the colors, the technique and method used to represent Mary with her son Jesus. The creativity of Schongaeur's work in this painting is Amazing. He uses the red color, on Mary's Dress and he uses red colors on the flowers. I think Schoungaeur painted the background flowers in red, to match Mary's dress. In comparison to Mary's dress, which stands out on this painting, because the dress overtakes all the other colors, since the red covers most of the paintings, and is the biggest piece on the painting, the red flowers represent lots of things as well. The flowers may symbolize Mary's purity, and life, since Mary had given life to Jesus, and flowers in real life, symbolize life. The same color on the flowers and on Mary's dress, could of been used exactly for this purpose, as a symbolism of life and growth. Above Mary's head on this painting, is the Crown, which is painted in unique, creative way. It looks as if the crown was engraved, or made of thin golden metal wires, of a technique called filigree, which perhaps wasn't common during that time, yet the image of the crown was painted in a very unique, delicate way, that it looks like a filigreed, or engraved piece of art work. The crown is decorated with red flowers, as the background of this painting, which has red flowers. I think the crown symbolize Mary's importance, such as she is the Queen, by her being a mother of Jesus, granting Mary with this status. The crown can also symbolize Jesus, Mary's outcome of being the mother of Jesus, which defines Jesus as God, symbolizes the importance of Jesus, and placing him above all, because the crown on the painting is painted above all other images, on the painting, symbolizing God being above, and above us all. The two angels holding the crown, might emphasize God, because anything associated with angels, represents anything which is not ordinary in real life, but beyond the real life, such as power and existence of God. My favorite part of the painting, is the symbolism represented between the Mary's red dress, the red flowers in the background, and the red flowers on the Crown. I think Schoungaur tried to connect all these, into one theme, unifying it into symbolism. While Schoungaurs, interpretation of creating Mary's dress, the flowers in the background, and the flowers on the crown, in the same color, might differ from my interpretation, but to me all of these three are connected, as a symbolism in unity and purity, growth, and God's power. My less favorite piece in the painting, is the color used on angels, which is dark royal blue. Perhaps this color is good in a contrast to other colors used on this painting, but I think angels should be painted in a lighter colors, to represent something pure and holly. Maybe lighter shades of blue could of been used, but regardless of Schoungauer's color choice in angels, I still find this piece of art work rather unique and beautiful.
This painting is considered to be Martin Schogavers most important work of art. The painting is popular for the beautiful red gown that Mary is wearing, and the glare in her eyes, and the detailed depiction of the flowers, trees, and birds. The painting was applied on a golden background.
When I look at this painting I sense a feel of passion. The flowers and trees really give the painting a more nature feel to it. I also notice the triangular composition.
